WordPress 3.3 is out:

Easier Uploading

We’ve streamlined things! Instead of needing to click on a specific upload icon based on your file type, now there’s just one. Once your file is uploaded, the appropriate fields will be displayed for entering information based on the file type.

Adding photos or other files to posts and pages just got easier. Drag files from your desktop and drop them into the uploader. Add one file at a time, or many at once.

We’ve added the rar and 7z file formats to the list of allowed file types in the uploader.

Singer Amy Winehouse found dead

Singer Amy Winehouse, infamous for erratic public behavior, arrests and drug problems, was found dead at her apartment in London Saturday, police and her publicist confirmed. She was 27.

Her death came less than two months after her latest release from a rehabilitation program and weeks following a disastrous performance where she was booed off a Belgrade, Serbia, stage by disappointed fans.

Winehouse spokesman Chris Goodman confirmed her death for CNN Saturday.

“Everyone who is involved with Amy is shocked and devastated,” Goodman said. “Our thoughts are with her family and friends. The family will issue a statement when ready.”

The “Rehab” singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehab program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.

Chinese builds 15-story hotel in 6 days

Using prefabricated materials, the Chinese completes a 15-story hotel in just 6 days.

The work crew erected the hotel — a soundproofed, thermal-insulated structure reportedly built to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake — with all prefabricated materials. In other words, a crew of off-site factory workers built the sections, and their on-site counterparts arranged them on the foundation for the Ark project.

Despite the frenetic pace of construction, no workers were injured — and thanks to the prefab nature of the process, the builders wasted very few construction materials. Below is a time-lapse video that shows the hotel being built from the ground up in less than a week. [Source: Yahoo]

So it seems like some folks think that a prayer before council meetings is a good idea but decided that they want to block Muslim prayers.

Hartford says no to Muslim prayer before meetings

HARTFORD, Conn. — Officials in Connecticut’s capital city say they won’t include Muslim prayers before council meetings after getting mostly negative feedback from the public.

The reversal has led the state branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations to plan a prayer vigil Monday night at Hartford City Hall in protest.

City councilors had planned to go ahead with the Muslim prayers despite negative e-mails. The Hartford Courant reported they decided Friday to hold an interfaith moment of silence instead.

The Islamic relations council is requesting that an imam be allowed to say a Muslim prayer at the City Council’s Sept. 27 meeting. (Source: Associated Press)

Perhaps there’s something not too right about having a prayer before council meetings in the first place.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A US appeals court on Thursday suspended a ban on publically-funded embryonic stem cell research to give the judge more time to consider the case.

“Upon consideration of the emergency motion for stay pending appeal… and it is ordered that the district court’s August 23, 2010 order be stayed pending further order of the court,” the Washington federal appeals court said.

In August, US district court judge Royce Lamberth ordered a temporary halt to federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, which President Barack Obama had authorized, saying it involved the destruction of human embryos.

Lamberth ruled in favor of a coalition of groups, including several Christian organizations, which had sought a temporary injunction on funding of the research ahead of a planned lawsuit. (Source: Yahoo News)

This is an area of technology that US should participate in.

Nice stuff includes Retina display which is said to be “the sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen ever, with four times the pixel count of previous iPhone models. In fact, the pixel density is so high that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. Which makes text amazingly crisp and images stunningly sharp.”

It comes also with a 5-megapixel still camera and video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio. Finally a decent camera!

Finding and replace text in MySQL

I’ve been slowly moving images into Amazon S3. My main purpose to do offload images to another server. This current server is quite badly hit due to hot-linking actually. All the old images hot-linked will be broken. I am not too concern about that. I have updated all my blog posts to reflect the new image urls.

These are the MySQL find and replace commands for URL address changes:

UPDATE `wp_posts` SET `post_content` = replace(`post_content`, "'http://beconfused.com/images/", "'http://beconfused.com/new-address/")
UPDATE `wp_posts` SET `post_content` = replace(`post_content`, "\"http://beconfused.com/images/", "'http://beconfused.com/new-address/")
UPDATE `wp_posts` SET `post_content` = replace(`post_content`, "'http://www.beconfused.com/images/", "'http://beconfused.com/new-address/")
UPDATE `wp_posts` SET `post_content` = replace(`post_content`, "\"http://www.beconfused.com/images/", "'http://beconfused.com/new-address/")

Not that my WordPress posts table is called ‘wp_posts’, yours may be called something else.

The above code changes all HTML links and images to the new address. Notice it starts with a quotation, this is to ensure what is being changed is part of a HTML attribute. Single and double quotations will be changed.

You can execute it in phpMyAdmin.
